Memory training techniques are useful when you’re learning a foreign language. They can spell the difference in terms of how fast you learn the language and how much of the words you’re learning you retain. Traditionally, language learning consisted of repeating words and phrases many times. Although this technique sure helps a lot with regards to learning how to pronounce the words, it’s not really helpful in remembering them. Instead, learners could be helped by using memory techniques that are especially appropriate for learning a foreign language. These memory training methods are much more effective in helping you remember foreign words and phrases for a long time.

The primary memory technique when learning a new language is to connect the new word to something familiar in the English language. This connection must be silly, though, in order to be effective. It has to be silly or fantastic that you’re not likely to forget it.

A huge problem in terms of remembering foreign phrases is that they are very unfamiliar to us that they make no sense. Therefore, the key is for us to connect a foreign word to something which we know and then think of an absurd image to help that word really stick in our mind. Our brain is likely to forget the ordinary or mundane things we experience. If what we see or hear is boring, it will most likely be forgotten about. The out of the ordinary, the insane, and silly things we see and hear are frequently remembered for a long period. Therefore, it is important to be sure that the image is one you find ridiculous.

Let’s take the word “caliente” for instance. It’s Spanish for “hot”. The word is not even close to being like the word “hot”, so how can you remember it? There are four syllables in “caliente” so you can try breaking it down. The first two syllables combined sound like collie, the dog breed. The third syllable (“en”) could be the English word “in”, and the last syllable (“te”) can be linked with the word “tea”. The last part of the word “caliente” is in fact pronounced the same was how you’d say the English word “day”, but “tea” should be close enough and would work in this case. Try linking the images you associated with each syllable in the right order: A collie is inside an air-conditioned home and he’s drinking iced tea.

It should be noted that image association is different from one individual to another. Let’s assume that for you, any time you see the word “caliente”, you see the dog sipping tea, inside his house in an easy chair because it is very hot outside. This silly image will be etched in your memory, making you remember that “caliente” means hot.

It is very important to understand that memory training such as this needs time to work. The very first time you start employing this for learning a new language, you’ll be slow. Nonetheless, as you get used to the technique, you will be able to think of absurd images and be able to remember foreign vocabulary much quicker.
